The Undead Life of Harlow Kaine (9)

This is a companion piece to The Undead Life of Harlow Kaine (7) & (8)

Down in the mansions basement theater a full-blown argument was taking place.

“ALIENS ARE SO REAL!” Daisy-Lynn was shouting at Alice from across the room, standing stalwartly next to Harlow who was just incredibly amused that her ‘Mar’s Attacks’ movie suggestion had sparked such an absurd and passionate debate. The room was quite literally divided with Harlow, Daisy-Lynn, Phibe and Remle on one side and Alice, Rosemary, Janelle, Li Na, and Kiki on the other. Sabine stood in the middle looking as amused as Harlow.

“That’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my life!” Rosemary snapped back.

“SAYS THE VAMPIRE!” Phibe countered with a hint of implied obviousness. “Who do you think built the pyramids?!”

“NOT ALIENS THAT’S FOR DAMN SURE!” Kiki responded to a chorus of agreement beside her.

A full blown, talk-over-each other squabble erupted. Harlow stood back from it with a hand over her mouth to stifle her laughter. She’d never seen her sister’s disagree so much. She soon found Sabine next to her. “It’s good sometimes to see this,” she mentioned casually. “How are you doing by the way?” she asked, putting a kind arm around Harlow.

“Better, after seeing everyone…which is strange I’m sure,” Harlow admitted. The older vampiress shrugged and tightened her one-armed hug briefly before releasing her.

“Not necessarily, the odds of running into an Abomination and a Knight at the same time are almost incalculable I’m sure so coming out of that alive on either end was a nasty little thrill. I’d want to see my family too.”

Both were referencing the Coven-wide meeting that had taken place this weekend to advocate vigilance but also to bond after almost losing one of their own. As the center of this attention, Harlow was self-aware enough that she enjoyed being coddled after her narrow brushes with permanent death. It soothed the fear she felt when she thought back on what would have happened had she been slower, if that mortal hadn’t returned…too many what-if’s. By tomorrow everyone would be back home and life would go on, but tonight, they could argue if aliens were real.

For the record…Harlow thought they were.
